Thor couldn’t succeed in killing Thanos during the events of Avengers: Infinity war. Thanos, moments before snapping, famously tells Thor that in order to kill him, Thor should’ve gone for the head, not for the chest. In Avengers: Endgame Thor takes that advice to heart. First, he beheads Thanos, in the Garden.
Then during all of his battles with Thanos in the Avengers Compound, Thor can be seen only aiming for the head when fighting, but unfortunately, still missing.
