Thanos was changed quite a bit during his adaptation from comic book to movie. While the true essence of the character remained mostly the same, some key parts were left on the cutting room floor. That did not stop the movies from acknowledging the bigger mythology of the character. During the Post credits scene of The Avengers, Thanos’s aid tells him “to challenge them is to court death.”
This is a reference to Thanos’s motive in the comics, which was to literally marry (court) Lady Death.
