It turns out the photo they saw, apart from being old, was conveniently angled so as to obscure the “leaning, crumbling front wall” that indicated very serious structural problems. They later learned these were due to subsidence – the house literally sinking into the ground.
The roof, meanwhile, had gaping holes in it, and most of the timbers had rotted. Cal and Clair had expected they might need to replace electrics and plumbing, among other things. What they hadn’t expected was a “derelict house” the local council described as dangerous…
